Service Description

Neriage is a two-part ceramics workshop exploring a beautiful technique in which clays of different colours are joined together to create patterns that run right through the body of each piece. There is no coloured glaze and no painted decoration, the design lives in the clay itself, visible inside and out. The first session is devoted to assembling the clays. Participants learn to marry two contrasting-coloured clays, stacking, folding, rolling and pressing them to build blocks with deliberate patterns such as checkerboards, spirals and veins. Much like preparing a layered pastry, the work is guided by what the cut will eventually reveal. The second session brings those patterns into form. We slice, roll out and build the assembled clays into real objects: dishes, bowls, vases and small vessels. The pattern is revealed at the moment of cutting, always with an element of surprise, and participants learn to join the slices cleanly so the design stays crisp. After firing, every piece can be finished with a clear transparent glaze, handled by the teacher. This workshop is in collaboration wit 90mil Art School.
